Tennis & Pickleball Injury Treatment in Chatham

The explosive start-stop footwork and repetitive overhead swings in tennis and pickleball put real stress on your elbow, shoulder, knees, and back. These injuries respond well to therapy that treats both the injury and the mechanics behind it.

01What Causes It

What causes tennis and pickleball injuries?

Tennis and pickleball are not high-impact sports, but the explosive start-stop footwork, lateral lunges, and repetitive overhead swings put real stress on your muscles, joints, and connective tissue. That is why elbow tendonitis, shoulder strain, knee inflammation, and back pain show up so often in players at every level.

Repetitive gripping and swinging inflames the tendons on the outside of the elbow. It is one of the most common injuries we see in tennis and pickleball players, and it responds well to rest, hands-on treatment, and retraining your swing mechanics.

Overhead serves and swings place heavy demand on the rotator cuff and shoulder capsule. Left untreated, this can turn into a nagging strain that limits your reach, your serve, and your power.

The start-stop footwork and lateral lunges the court demands load the knee and the IT band running along the outside of the thigh. This pain often shows up as a dull ache that worsens the longer you play.

Twisting to generate power for a swing or serve puts real load on your lower back. When your core fatigues before your match does, your back picks up the slack, which leads to spasms and stiffness.

Pickleball may look lower-impact than tennis, but the quick direction changes and repetitive dinking motion carry their own overuse pattern, especially for players newer to racquet sports.

Pushing through a minor ache to keep playing is the most common way a small issue turns into months on the sidelines. Getting evaluated at the first sign of pain keeps a strain from becoming a real setback.

02How PT Helps

How physical therapy in Chatham helps.

Recovery starts with a full assessment of your injury, your playing history, and your goals, whether that is a competitive season or a weekend league. Early sessions focus on calming inflammation and restoring pain-free motion. From there we add hands-on treatment, targeted strengthening, and a look at your footwork, swing, and serve mechanics to find what is actually driving the overuse. The goal is not just pain relief. It is getting you back on the court playing at the level you expect from yourself, without the pain finding its way back.

03What To Expect

What to expect from your recovery.

01

Assessment and pain calming

We pinpoint what is driving your pain, whether it is your swing, your footwork, or overuse, and start hands-on work right away to calm inflammation and restore basic motion.

02

Strength and mechanics

We rebuild strength around the injured area and work on the footwork, swing, and serve mechanics that led to the injury in the first place.

03

Return to the court

As pain fades and strength returns, we guide your return to full play with the tools to keep the injury from coming back.
