At Body Moksha Physical Therapy, we are committed to offering the most evidence based and cutting edge treatments to our patients to get them back to living their best life as quickly as possible.

As part of this commitment, we are proud to offer Shockwave Therapy aka EPAT (Extracorpeal Pulse Activation Technology) or ESWT at our clinic. Shockwave therapy is the most advanced non-invasive treatment for orthopedic conditions designed to provide relief for patients who are dealing with acute or chronic pain.

If you’re dealing with a musculoskeletal injury and want to make a full recovery faster, Shockwave Therapy is an exciting new treatment option to help you heal better and see results faster than ever before.

What is EPAT (Extracorpeal Pulse Activation Technology) or Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a breakthrough, noninvasive treatment that involves delivery of shock waves to injured soft tissue to quickly reduce pain and promote healing. It allows damaged tissues to regenerate and heal faster versus other traditional treatments that you may have tried without success.

Shockwave therapy is one of the most advanced and highly effective treatment methods available and is based on a set of pressure waves that stimulate tissue metabolism, enhance blood circulation, break up scar tissue and calcifications, and accelerate the healing process.

What is Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology?

Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology, or EPAT, is the most advanced and highly effective non-invasive shock wave therapy treatment method cleared by the FDA. It is an evidence-based technology platform that utilizes a unique set of proprietary acoustic pressure waves to stimulate metabolism, enhance blood circulation, and accelerate the body’s natural healing process. Extracorporeal means outside of the body. Using this technology allows us to deliver controlled energy over a highly customizable area from the outside without any needles, incisions or injections.

This technology combined with good physical therapy is a powerhouse and absolute game changer in the treatment of acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders.

Shockwave therapy allows us to target the injured or dysfunctional area to encourage your body to do the work by stimulating a cellular process that enhances growth factor migration and your body’s natural healing cells activity to regenerate the problematic tissue or area.

How Can EPAT Shockwave Therapy Help Me?

EPAT Shockwave is an exciting treatment option because it improves tissue healing for an area that has degenerated due to poor blood flow, weakness, or overuse injury. Even better, EPAT Shockwave has a proven success rate that is equal to or greater than that of traditional treatment methods, without the typical risks, complications, or lengthy recovery times. For this reason, EPAT Shockwave is a popular alternative to treatment methods such as surgery.

What are the benefits of EPAT Shockwave Therapy?

An alternative to traditional treatment methods, such as surgery, ESWT improves the regenerative potential instead of further damaging an area that has degenerated due to poor blood flow, weakness, or a tissue or overuse injury. ESWT has a proven success rate that is equal to or greater than that of the traditional treatment methods, but it doesn’t have the risks, complications, or lengthy recovery times that are associated with those methods.

When ESWT is performed by a qualified healthcare professional, like one of our physical therapy clinicians, it provides patients experiencing acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain with a multitude of benefits.

Those who receive ESWT in combination with other treatment techniques such as hands on manual therapy and exercises in physical therapy see even better and faster results.

In addition to providing pain relief or pain reduction, ESWT does the following:

  • Accelerates the healing process
  • Improves blood flow and circulation
  • Restores mobility
  • Stimulates the metabolism for tissue regeneration
  • Treats the source of the pain or injury

OTHER BENEFITS:

  • 91% success rate (as per clinical studies)
  • Non-invasive
  • No anesthesia
  • No risk of infection
  • No scarring
  • No downtime
  • Over 80% patient satisfaction
  • Faster, easier healing

Is EPAT Shockwave safe?

Shockwave therapy is an FDA-cleared technology that when performed by a qualified healthcare professional, such as one of our physical therapy clinicians, has virtually no side effects or risks, including no risk of infection or scarring. This technology has undergone extensive clinical studies and tests to confirm its safety and efficacy and is currently used all around the world.

What is a typical EPAT Shockwave Therapy session like?

Application of Shockwave therapy is quick and usually only takes up to 15 minutes. However, the length can vary depending on what injury or condition of the musculoskeletal system is being treated.

During the treatment process, one of our clinicians will apply a coupling gel to the skin of the area being treated. After the gel is applied, a handheld applicator will be used to release RSW/EPAT pressure waves over the area of pain and surrounding tissues.

The pulses will slowly increase until the desired tolerated energy level is reached. EPAT does not require anesthesia and is generally well-tolerated.

After the session, patients are able to bear weight immediately as well as return to their normal activities with really no downtime.

Patients will typically have ESWT applied for 3 to 6 treatment sessions 1x per week, but could be more or less depending on their injury or condition. The long term beneficial effects of ESWT are often experienced after three treatments. However, it can vary between patients. Some patients may experience immediate pain relief while others may take up to four weeks to begin to feel relief.

Is EPAT Shockwave right for you?

ESWT is designed to treat a wide variety of conditions. Over 80% of patients treated with ESWT report to be pain-free or have significant pain reduction. ESWT is very effective for treating those who are suffering from chronic or acute pain as well as effective in treating athletes and sports injuries.
